When you read that many of the early rock and rock greats were strongly influenced by gospel they really should have written that they were influenced by this lady. The one and only Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Please don't stop watching before she starts to play......this was recorded near the end of her life but it will answer the question, "how did gospel influence the early rock pioneers".

This is Ella Mae Morse and the legendary Freddie Slack from 1946 (titles says 1945, but I'm pretty sure it was '46). Freddie Slack was a big influence on guys like Jerry Lee Lewis. Check out some of the slang including the use of "homie".

I've probably listened to this song 150 times in the last month. I bought the Live At The Aragon cd at Best Buy that included a bonus live DVD. They play the entire Crack The Skye album in order with the movie they made for each song playing on a giant screen behind them while they play. If you've not heard the story behind the whole Crack The Skye album, it's crazy. You should look it up because it's too hard to explain; worm holes, other dimensions, Gregori Rasputin, quadriplegics time traveling. Another interesting thing I didn't know until I watched the live disk is that 3 different singers sing on this one song. Brent and Troy sing on most Mastodon songs but Brann the drummer sings the majority of this one and he might have the best voice.

I once called into a radio station to answer a trivia question about who first recorded this song. I tried to explain to the nunbskull that the first known recording was by a teenage girl from Middlesboro Kentucky by the name of Turner, or perhaps Clarence Ashley and the the song has been around for much longer than that. He insisted that the ANIMALS HAD BEEN THE FIRST!!!!! LOL As a former radio trivia show host here's a hint. Always do your research before making a fool of yourself on the air.

This was recorded on the spur of the moment and featured the legendary Son House (the man who Robert Johnson idolized) - Willie Brown (the same Willie Brown that Johnson mentions in Crossroads) and "Fiddlin" Joe Martin. It was recorded in front of a grocery store (Clark Grocery - the store sign is now in the delta blues museum) you can hear a train roll by while they record. Without Son and Willie we probably would not have ever heard of Robert Johnson and without him rock and roll would have had a much different sound most likely.
Their pay for recording this was one soda pop, between them.
